A Canadian has been indicted in the United States for his role in a fraud scheme that allegedly bought tax-free cigarettes from American Indians and sold them at huge profits to raise money for the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah. Salim Nemir Awde, 45, a Lebanese-Canadian with alleged ties to Hezbollah, was among 11 people named in a criminal indictment handed down by a grand jury on Jan. 23 and unsealed yesterday by a Michigan court. Prosecutors allege the cigarettes were obtained with the complicity of members of the Seneca Indian Tribe in New York and resold in Michigan with counterfeit stamps in order to evade state sales taxes of US$12.50 per carton.
