A senior army officer turned himself in to police Tuesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with the pre-dawn demolition of a strip of bars, shops and eateries in the heart of Bangkok last month. Lt. Gen. Himalai Pewphan is suspected of unlawful nighttime intrusion and malicious mischief for his role in the Jan. 26 action, in which hundreds of men with demolition equipment virtually leveled a city block in just a few hours. Himalai told police he was innocent of the offenses, which carry a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment. No one was seriously injured during the incident, which resulted from a property dispute.
