A former Sudanese pilot who was investigated as a possible al-Qaida operative was sentenced to six months in prison for immigration fraud and ordered deported. At a hearing Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge James Beaty Jr. gave Mekki Hamed Mekki credit for time served. He will be held until he’s deported. Mekki, 30, of Greensboro, declined an opportunity to speak during the hearing. Mekki received international scrutiny after he was arrested in September while working as a taxi driver in North Carolina. He pleaded guilty in December to three counts of immigration fraud, including making false statements to obtain a tourist visa. Local prosecutors have said little about other allegations against Mekki, but officials in Washington have told The Associated Press that federal authorities believed he was linked to terrorist groups.
