Venezuela has ignored international requests to guarantee the safety of reporters and news media attacked by government followers, the Inter American Press Association said Tuesday. IAPA president Andres Garcia, of Mexico’s Novedades de Quintana Roo newspaper, said the group has asked the Organization of American States to compel the government to comply with protection orders issued last year by the OAS’ Human Rights Commission. Venezuela’s leading news media and several journalists sought the OAS’ help last year after several assaults by government demonstrators who accuse the news media of conspiring against Chavez. Assailants tossed small explosives at two newspapers, two television stations and a radio station last year, and a photographer was killed during a clash between government and opposition demonstrators.
