The wife of a kidnapped former congressman narrowly avoided abduction Tuesday, escaping on a motorcycle as her captors tried to move her from one vehicle to another. Lucia de Gechem was stopped at an illegal road block in southern Colombia, Huila state secret police director Joaquin Espinoza told the radio station Radionet. When the men at the roadblock tried to move her to another car, she grabbed a motorcycle nearby and raced away, he said. Espinoza said Gechem later boarded a bus to her hometown of Neiva, 240 kilometers (150 miles) southwest of Bogota. Her husband, Eduardo Gechem, was kidnapped on Feb. 20, 2002, after leftist rebels hijacked a domestic airliner. The kidnapping prompted the government to end peace negotiations with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and send troops into a vast rebel safe haven the FARC had occupied during the talks.
