Law enforcement authorities in several large cities increased security yesterday as the Bush administration put the nation on its second-highest alert level. The elevation of the risk level prompted police departments to increase patrols and focus their attention on landmarks, churches and synagogues, rail lines and airports while federal and state authorities stepped up scrutiny at cargo ports and border crossings, from New York State’s border with Canada to California’s border with Mexico. Yesterday afternoon, the national alert level was raised to orange, the second-highest level, marking a high risk of terrorist attack, from yellow, which represents an elevated risk. The Department of Homeland Security said there was no specific information on where, when or how an attack might occur.
