SOFTWARE giant Microsoft has warned spammers are likely to shift their operations to Asia and other regions where law enforcement is weak, rendering much of the planned crackdown in Britain and the US ineffective. It said senders of unsolicited emails are ‘hijacking’ computer servers in the region as they seek increasingly devious ways to cover their tracks and throw anti-spam drives off guard. Earlier this month, Microsoft escalated its campaign against spammers, whose output clogs virtual inboxes worldwide, with plans to sue 15 alleged offenders in the US and Britain. But a regional spokesman for Bill Gates’ company now says: ‘We expect spammers will increasingly set up operations in places where they can operate most easily’ as the legal push intensifies.
