Digna Ochoa, a prominent human rights lawyer found dead from gunshot wounds in 2001, killed herself and was not murdered, according to a special prosecutor investigating the case. Special prosecutor Margarita Guerra is to present her official findings Saturday, but government officials confirmed today that Guerra concluded Ochoa’s death was most likely a suicide. The long-awaited ruling immediately drew criticism from the many international human rights officials who knew Ochoa. “Although the investigation is over, there is no sense of closure or certainty,” said Laurie Freeman, the Mexico associate at the Washington Office on Latin America who had worked with Ochoa. Freeman said there were serious deficiencies in the way authorities here conducted the autopsy, lifted fingerprints and preserved the crime scene.
