Hundreds of Palestinians joined by Italian activists marked the 21st anniversary of the massacres at Beirut’s Sabra and Shatila camps in which 1,500 Palestinian refugees were killed. They gathered Tuesday at the scene of a mass grave at the entrance to Shatila. The massacre by Christian militiamen of old men and of women and children lasted three days, following the assassination of president-elect Bashir Gemayel on September 14, 1982. Israel’s army, having invaded Lebanon, was at the time deployed in force around the camps. An Israeli parliamentary commission found the defence minister and now premier Ariel Sharon indirectly responsible for the massacre. Full Story
