Hundreds of people took to the streets here on Sunday, turning the funeral of a local Coca-Cola executive who was kidnapped and killed last week into a protest march against a series of kidnappings in the Philippines. The mourners, most of whom were ethnic Chinese, held placards and streamers that read “Hang kidnappers!” and “Justice for victims of kidnappings!” They escorted the hearse carrying Betti Chua Sy, 32, whose body was found a day after she was kidnapped. The incident shocked and angered Chinese-Filipinos, who have been the primary targets of the kidnapping-for-ransom gangs. Ms. Sy was the 156th such kidnapping victim this year, according to the Citizens Action Against Crime, a group working closely with the ethnic Chinese population on the issue.
