The Bush administration is not involved in plans for a North Korea visit by a group including congressional staffers and a former top scientist at a U.S. nuclear lab, a U.S. official said Friday. “A Senate staff delegation that has been to North Korea before and has contact with the North Koreans put this together,” said the official, who spoke on condition that he not be identified. “It is at their initiative and through their channels. … We are not facilitating or opposing it.” Earlier, a South Korean foreign ministry official confirmed a USA Today newspaper report that North Korea agreed to let the delegation visit its nuclear complex at Yongbyon, which U.S. officials believe may be a key part of Pyongyang’s suspected efforts to develop atomic weapons.
