THE Federal Government will fast-track a new law so facial biometric identifiers can be included in Australian passports ahead of a tight US deadline. The Australian Privacy Foundation warns, however, that passports containing biometric identifiers could develop into “a de-facto Australia Card”. “The additional costs of biometrics will tempt governments towards function creep as a way of justifying the costs,” says Graham Greenleaf, APF spokesman and University of NSW law professor. “Australian policy should not be dictated by the US or any other government.” The US visa waiver program requires countries such as Australia to issue passports with a facial recognition biometric identifier held on a micro-chip if they are to remain in the program beyond October.
