U.S. authorities have indicted eight accused leaders or key members of a Colombian drug cartel suspected of supplying as much as 60 percent of the cocaine that enters the United States, an administration official said on Thursday. The official said indictments being unsealed later on Thursday involve the Norte Valle cartel, which took over much of Colombia’s drug trafficking after police dismantled the powerful Medellin and Cali cartels in the mid-1990s. The cartel is believed to be responsible for shipping 100,000 kilograms of cocaine with a wholesale value of $1.2 billion since 1990, the official said. The accused drug traffickers named in the indictments have been approved by the State Department’s Narcotics Rewards Committee for its rewards program, the official said.
