Thousands of young supporters of Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo descended on the headquarters of the UN mission to protest a UN report condemning a state crackdown on an opposition rally. The powerful Fesci student union is the latest pro-Gbagbo group to denounce the report, due to be presented to the UN Security Council in a closed-door session on Friday, which accuses the “highest state authorities” of ordering a “carefully planned and executed” crackdown on the March 25 rally. According to the report, leaked early last week by Radio France Internationale, state security forces and parallel militias, including Fesci and the fiery “Young Patriots”, acted on state orders to violently quash the opposition rally, which was banned by a presidential decree.
