Once again, Facebook has been caught up in a privacy-related scandal of sorts. However, this time Facebook was reprimanded not by a regulatory body, but by another tech firm. Apple is preventing Facebook from offering its Facebook Research app to iPhone users, citing a “clear breach” of Facebook’s agreement with the company.
Users aged 13-35 could earn up to $20 per month by downloading the Facebook Research app, which allowed the company to conduct intensive market research based on the web activity, location data and the contents of messages being sent from and received on users’ devices. In offering the app to iPhone users, Facebook had avoided the Apple’s review process for consumer apps by using a program meant for companies to serve their staff with internal apps.
