Chinese officials say that the country is investing more in the development new weapons as a way of challenging US military dominance. The efforts relate to various weapons systems, from guns to fighter jets. “We are now more focused on boosting indigenous research and development capabilities in all possible ways, especially precision,” one Chinese official stated.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has accelerated the modernization and expansion of the Chinese military every since he came into power in 2013. Last week, China announced that it will increase its military spending by 7.5%, which is slightly lower than last year’s 8% increase, but still higher than the growth rate of the Chinese economy, which is predicted not to exceed 6.5% this year.
