Smart devices have a poor reputation when it comes to security. However, a recent incident shows that it is not just the security of Internet of things (IoT) devices themselves that users have to worry about. In addition to securing IoT devices against hacking attempts, manufactures also need to protect the data that smart products produce, and this is what Orvibo, a Chinese smart home tech firm, failed to do.

Last month, security researchers at vpnMentor found an unsecured Orvibo database exposing “over 2 billion logs that record everything from usernames, email addresses, and passwords, to precise locations.” The researchers informed the firm about the incident on June 16, but Orvibo has so far failed to address the issue. The leaked data impacts users across the globe.
