Positive Technologies has released a new study analyzing how much Advanced persistent threat (APT) groups tend to spend on hacking tools, and how much they can earn from successful attacks. The report found that APT groups can expect to earn back at least 4 times what they spend, and for some threat actors the ROI is far higher than that.
For a campaign targeting large organizations in the financial services sector, threat actors often spend at least $55,000. Extensive cyber espionage campaigns cost almost ten times more than that, often requiring attackers to invest at least $500,000 for tools and other resources. However, the profit of major campaigns can be in the tens of millions of dollars.
