In July of this year, the city of New Bedford, Massachusetts suffered a ransomware attack that impacted 158 machines, representing 4% of the City’s computers. The ransomware used to infect the devices was the notorious Ryuk strain.
The city initially chose to negotiate with the attackers, who were demanding a ransom of $5.3 million. New Bedford proposed a payment of $400,000, which was a similar amount as that paid by various other local governments in recent attacks. However, the threat actors made no counteroffer, prompting the city to opt for recovering the encrypted data without help from the attackers.
