In 2016, it was revealed that two data breaches at Yahoo had impacted a staggering 3 billion accounts. Under the proposed settlement for an ongoing class action lawsuit against the company, users who were affected by the breach are eligible for a $100 payout or two years of free credit monitoring. It is not guaranteed that applicants will actually receive $100 since the $117.5 million settlement may apply to as many as 194 million users.
People who suffered serious financial damages as a result of the breaches can file a claim to receive financial compensation of up to $25,000. People have until July of next year to file a claim, but the settlement has not received final court approval yet. This is expected to happen in April 2020.
