The Senate confirmed Porter Goss as the new CIA director on Wednesday amid a clamor for intelligence reform, constant terrorism threats and a persistent insurgency in Iraq. The Senate voted 77-17 to approve the nomination. The votes against President Bush’s pick for spy chief all came from Democrats. Bush said he was pleased by the strong bipartisan majority that voted to confirm Goss. “He is the right man to take on the essential mission of leading the CIA at this critical moment in our nation,” Bush said in a statement.
