One by one, the largest mail-handling plants in California are taking on strange, new devices to sniff day and night for anthrax in most of the state’s mail. Boasting high accuracy in sensing virulent anthrax, the new biodetectors are compelling difficult conversations between the U.S. Postal Service, its employees and its neighbors on what to do when the anthrax siren goes off — questions that could arise more often if biodetectors are installed more widely in society.
