U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to impose a 25-percent tariff on Mexico and Canada when he takes office in 2025. The two countries’ leaders are now urging dialogue and cooperation between the three countries. On Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that she plans to send Trump a letter stressing this cooperation. She also warned that such tariffs would have detrimental effects to both Mexico and the U.S., causing inflation and job losses. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to Trump on Monday evening, also stressing the ties between the two countries. Trump’s tariff threats have already impacted the markets, and may be a negotiating tactic.
