The official newspaper of the Chinese Military published an article highlighting the struggle the force haces due to “peace disease,” as the army has not engaged with another country since Vietnam in the late 1970s. One of the key problems of this “disease” is the regular falsification of training data and graft/corruption on the part of army officers. The monitoring apparatus within the military has been rooting out these issues wherever it can find them, but they remain common. Since 2013, over 13,000 officers have been punished for corruption. In the early 2000s, military drills were often used to generate additional funding and boost promotion chances, incentives that have been addressed by policies under President Xi Jinping.
