Twitter suspended over 70 million accounts in May and June, as it increases efforts to clamp down on fake accounts and disinformation. This rate is more than double that from mid-2017, prior to the disclosure of Russian use of fake accounts to foment political instability and influence the 2016 election. The change reflects a shift in Twitter’s free speech discourse that previously emphasized the importance of unfettered free speech and minimal interference with user content, generated at a time when threats posed by bots and coordinated disinformation campaigns were not fully understood or appreciated.
