A new law in Vietnam would, starting January 1st, require internet companies to remove content critical of the government and provide data to the government upon request. In response to the legislation and ongoing complaints of content removal on Facebook, over 100,000 activists and social media users in the country have migrated to Minds, another U.S. social media website. “It’s more anonymous and a secretive platform,” said one Vietnamese activist. The site does not require personal information and it encrypts all chats. Last year, the Vietnamese government began to create a 10,000-person cybersecurity force that will monitor anti-government and other content.
