Advanced Russian jamming of electronic signals in Syria has been a challenge for a growing number of troops deployed there, but has also provided the U.S. military a dynamic training ground for countering Russian technology on the battlefield. Soldiers and technology experts alike have affirmed that this kind of electronic warfare is as dangerous as conventional attacks, as they block communications, knock out radar, and even impair aircraft. The U.S. military has fought mostly non-conventional forces fighting asymmetrical warfare. And while cyber operations have been an important part of the non-military aspect of the conflicts, opponents have not used advanced electronic warfare technology. One General said that the Russians “are testing us every day” through their use of electronic technologies in Syria, disabling communications and even disabling aircraft.
