The Pentagon has indicated that China may be training for strikes against U.S. targets as its bombers continue to increase their activity and range. The increase in this area is likely part of China’s efforts to communicate their improved capabilities and regional intentions. The DOD reported to Congress that the PLA “has rapidly expanded its overwater bomber operating areas, gaining experience in critical maritime regions and likely training for strikes against US and allied targets…The PLA may continue to extend its operations beyond the first island chain, demonstrating the capability to strike US and allied forces and military bases in the western Pacific Ocean, including Guam.”
