Containment activities against the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Eastern DRC, the country’s second this year, have been disrupted due to a rebel attack in the city of Beni. Over 100 people have died in the current outbreak and health workers are struggling to contain further spread due to insecurity largely caused by the Allied Democratic Froces, an Islamist militia from Uganda. A lead epidemiologist with the WHO has described the current combination of disease outbreak plus an ongoing security situation preventing travel by health workers as a “dreaded” scenario that could allow the disease to spread exponentially.
