The potential use of nuclear weapons by the United States in times of conflict may become an important issue during the campaign for the 2020 US presidential election.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who is one of the major candidates for the Democratic nomination for President and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has teamed up with Adam Smith, the Chairmen of the equivalent House committee, to introduce “The No First Use Act”. The bill aims to prohibit the US from initiating the use of nuclear weapons in a potential future war. While it is not likely that the bill will be adopted by the Senate, where Republican lawmakers constitute a majority, elements of the legislation may be added to the annual defense policy bill by Smith, while Warren can draw attention to the issue on the campaign trail.
