The United Nations Secretary-General is calling on India and Pakistan to “exercise maximum restraint and take immediate steps” to de-escalate tensions between the two countries that have risen in the wake of a recent suicide attack in Kashmir, in which 42 members of India’s Central Reserve Police Force were killed. The attack was claimed by Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
In response to the attack, the Indian foreign ministry stated that Pakistan needs to “take credible and visible action against the perpetrators of [the] terrorist attack and other terrorists and terror groups operating from areas under their control.” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has offered to help mediate peace between the two parties, but this unlikely to be accepted by India, as the country has so far insisted on bilateral talks with Pakistan.
