While Russia limited its involvement in Africa after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country has been increasing its influence in the continent over the past two years by strengthening ties with a large number of countries including Mozambique, Angola, Central African Republic, Libya, Sudan, Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.
Russia’s activities in Africa range from military assistance and arms sales to cooperation under security and economic partnerships. Analysts warn that the increasingly militaristic approach taken by Moscow, which includes support for autocratic leaders, often has a destabilizing effect on countries and exacerbates existing conflicts.
