On Thursday, renewed fighting in Libya further increased the death toll related to renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar’s campaign to overthrow the internationally recognized Libyan government. Despite this, both the United States and Russia refused to support a draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
While Russia disproved of the draft because it identified Haftar as the party responsible for the violence, the United States did not provide an explanation for its position. Analysts believe the administration of US President Donald Trump may want some more time decide on a clear position on the situation in Libya.
The ongoing conflict in Libya is the second internal conflict since Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi was ousted in 2011.
