Special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election states that the FBI believes the Russian military intelligence agency (GRU) “gained access to the network of at least one Florida country government” in November of 2016. The GRU allegedly managed this feat by sending spear phishing emails to more than 120 county election officials.
The report also provides new details on previously known GRU hacking activity that targeted the Democratic National Committee (DNC). According to the report, GRU officials gained access to 29 computers of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and 30 computers of the DNC, allowing them to steal 70 GB of records from the DCCC and 300 GB from the DNC.
