While the battle for Tripoli between renegade commander Khalifa Haftar’s troops and forces loyal to the internationally recognized Libyan government in Tripoli rages on, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Wednesday evacuated 325 refugees from a UN detention centre located at the southern edge of the capital.
The evacuation came one day after 12 refugees were hospitalized as a result of armed violence. Matthew Brook, the UNHCR’s deputy chief of mission in Libya warned that “[t]he dangers for refugees and migrants in Tripoli have never been greater than they are at present.”
