A new study by OneTrust and the IAPP shows that a significant minority of companies (45%) are not aiming to achieve compliance under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) before the new legislation goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. One in four organizations (25%) plan to reach compliance by July 1 of that year, and the remaining 20% expect to do so even later.
The CCPA is the first comprehensive consumer privacy legislation adopted in the US. It resembles the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), requiring companies that collect or store information on California residents to take elaborate steps to safeguard people’s privacy. Unsurprisingly then, organizations that have achieved a high level of GDPR compliance on average aim to achieve CCPA compliance far earlier than businesses that are not compliant with GDPR.
