Samsung has developed new artificial intelligence (AI) technology capable of generating deepfake videos based on as little as a single photograph. Deepfakes are fabricated images or videos showing individuals saying and doing things they never said or did.
Because deepfakes are hard to distinguish from actual footage, they can be used to commit fraud and in misinformation campaigns to undermine the reputation of powerful individuals, including politicians, which can lead to election meddling. For now the AI generated deepfake videos still contain glitches, but as the AI algorithms used to create the footage get smarter, these issues are bound to become less and less noticeable.
