A new survey by Shred-it shows that data breaches are very often the result of human error. The majority of C-suite executives (53%) and more than a quarter of Small Business Owners (SBOs) (28%) point to human error or accidental loss by an external vendor/source as the cause of data breaches at their firm, while 47% of executives and 31% of SBOs mentioned human error or accidental loss by an employee/insider.
The report also highlights the threat of malicious insiders and third-parties, with 43% of executives and 31% of SBOs mentioning deliberate acts by third-parties as the cause of breaches, while 21% of executives and 28% of SBOs identified nefarious insiders as the culprits.
