A string of recent ransomware attacks across the United States confirms that this threat is rapidly getting out of hand, especially for public sector entities:
- Last week, various systems of Henry County, Georgia were infected with ransomware. The incident impacted the budgeting and procurement systems, and the Planning and Zoning Department.
- The Town of Collierville, Tennessee recently had some of its systems infected with Ryuk ransomware. The incident impacted several services including permits, public records requests, and business services.
- Ryuk also infected the libraries of Onondaga County (OCPL), New York in recent weeks, rendering systems unavailable for several days.
- In June, a community radio station in Tampa, Florida suffered a ransomware attack affecting various audio archives as well as live HD broadcasts. While the radio station could not recover from backup, it decided not to pay the ransom at the advice of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
