In fiscal year 2018, US federal government departments experienced a total of 31,000 cybersecurity incidents, according to the Office of Management and Budget’s annual report on the state of cybersecurity in the government. The number represents a 12% decrease from the 35,000 incidents reported in the previous fiscal year.
In addition, no major cyber incident that threatened national security occurred in 2018. Federal government spending on cybersecurity approached $15 billion, with the Department of Defense accounting for more than half.
However, the report also identifies 5 issues that undermined security in many federal agencies. These were shortcomings in terms of data protection, network segmentation, patch management, authentication and continuous monitoring.
