On Sunday, about two weeks after US President Donald Trump cancelled secret negotiations with Taliban leaders, 9 members of the militant group discussed the failure of the US-Taliban deal with Chinese officials, a Taliban spokesman has stated. China previously expressed support for an intra-Afghan dialogue to end the war in Afghanistan.
Earlier this month, the United States and the Taliban reached an agreement “in principle” to end the war in Afghanistan after 18 years of fighting. The agreement, which still required the approval of Trump, stated that the US would withdraw 5,400 of the almost 14,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan. But Trump cancelled talks to finalize the agreement after the group claimed responsibility for an attack in Kabul that claimed the lives of a US soldier and 11 others.
