A new report by Thales and Verint provides an extensive overview of the major threat groups operating in cyberspace. The study looks at the campaigns of around 60 hacking groups over a one-year period. About 50% of the actors under scrutiny were funded by governments and worked to steal confidential information from geopolitically significant targets.
The other threat actors were classified as ideologically-driven hacktivists (25%), cyber-criminals motivated by financial gain (20%) and cyber-terrorists (5%). The threat groups mostly went after states, with a special focus on their defense departments. Other popular targets were organizations in the finance, energy and transportation sectors.
