The websites of many US presidential candidates suffer from security and privacy issues, a recent audit by the Online Trust Alliance (OTA) found. Just 7 out of 23 candidates, including Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, achieved the “Honor Roll,” meaning that their websites provided sufficient privacy, security and consumer protection to users.
After the audit, the OTA gave campaigns with insecure websites a week to resolve the issues, but only one of the campaigns attempted to do so, and it did not succeed. The most common issue with campaign websites was a lack of user privacy. The 16 websites that missed out on the Honor Roll all fell short in this regard, often because they lacked a proper privacy statement, or they shared user data in ways that violate privacy.
