In the first six months of this year, phishing campaigns rose by 6% compared to the second half of 2018, while other fraud attacks such as fake mobile apps and financial malware skyrocketed, increasing by 191% and 80%, respectively, a new report by RSA Security shows. Phishing remained the top cyber fraud threat in Q2 of 2019, accounting for 37% of fraud attacks. It was followed by rogue mobile apps (29%), Trojans (17%) and brand abuse (17%).
Daniel Cohen of RSA Security believes that the surge in rogue mobile applications “is testament to how perpetrators will constantly seek out weak points,” like “consumers’ growing trust in mobile apps as a means to interact with brands and make purchases.”
