The Great Cannon Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS0 tool was deployed against the LIHKG platform used by Hong Kong protesters to coordinate. The Great Cannon is a tool that hijacks traffic between IP addressed, resulting in the ability to replace unencrypted content using man-in-the-middle techniques. The Great Cannon is currently working towards taking the platform online, and the attacks were initiated as early as August 31 using malicious code.
LIHKG stated that they have reasons to believe that there may be a national level of power behind the attacks, as botnets from all over the world were manipulated when the attack was launched. The total request exceeded 1.5 billion and the highest record of unique visitors exceeded 6.5 million an hour.
