The Ministry of Energy announced that Saudi Arabia plans to begin enriching and selling uranium. The move by Saudi Arabia is part of a plan to monetize all minerals. Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud stated that the country will enrich uranium to make a “yellowcake,” which is used to prepare uranium fuel for nuclear reactors. While these plans could potentially connect to nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia claims that it wants to “use nuclear power to diversify its energy mix.” However, it is unclear where the stopping point for the country in its nuclear ambitions might end.
