The already touchy subject of Hugo Chavez’s alleged sympathies for Colombian Marxist rebels has grown testier over the “snatch,” apparently by bounty hunters, of a top Colombian insurgent while he was taking part here in a leftist conference. Another element was added Wednesday to the confusion surrounding last month’s shady capture operation, with a high-ranking member of President Chavez’s administration accusing the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency of playing a role in the affair. Rodrigo Granda, considered the “foreign minister” of Colombia’s powerful FARC guerrilla organization, is currently cooling his heels in a Colombian jail awaiting eventual trial on “narco-terrorism” charges.
