Homeland security goes to college

With a sense of urgency and opportunity, college campuses are embracing homeland security as a new field of study and research. The University of South Carolina is studying terrorist psychology. The University of South Florida and the University of Alabama at Birmingham are developing new methods to detect biological threats, while North Carolina State University is researching ways to protect the nation’s food supply. The federal Homeland Security Department, using a $70 million program the Bush administration wants to scale back, is hoping to build a cadre of homeland defense experts and a research network that can respond quickly to the changing threat.
