One came from a middle-class family aspiring to economic mobility. The other grew up in a poor section of town where extremist groups jostle for members and speak freely of holy war. The two, Jihad Hamad and Youssef Muhammed el-Hajdib, would probably never have met at home, but fate apparently brought them together in Germany, where they had each gone to help lift their families out of Tripoli’s social and economic stagnation.
