Combining artificial intelligence with mass spectrometry, scientists have developed a platform able to diagnose Zika virus with an accuracy above 95%, even as the virus mutates and over a time range unmatched by other diagnostic kits. In the future, any lab in the world with a mass spectrometer could access the diagnostic platform hosted at the University of Campinas in Brazil. “Our proposal is to make the platform available in the cloud, so that it can be downloaded to any mass spectrometer anywhere in the world, data analysis can be performed online.” This combination of medical technology with AI and basic internet connections has the potential to alter the medical landscape, especially in resource-poor areas.
